Chapter Fifteen

When you fuck up.

Those were the only words Shane heard. The refrain ran through his head, over and over. His life's motto.

When you fuck up.

He shook his head, ignored the pitying look Wyatt was giving him—and wasn't that a kick in the balls. Wyatt, pitying him. He didn't have time for Wyatt's pity, didn't have time to wonder when the hell things had changed, when he'd become the one to be pitied. He needed to go after Chloe. To apologize. To explain he hadn't meant the question the way she'd taken it.

Wyatt grabbed his arm again. "Let her go."

"I can't—"

"You need to let her cool off." Wyatt readjusted his grip, tugged Shane toward the living room and forced him to sit before moving into the kitchen. Shane heard him rummaging through cabinets, heard the clink of glass against glass then looked up to see Wyatt returning with the bottle of Scotch and two glasses.

He filled both glasses, placed the bottle in the center of the table, then handed one glass to Shane.

"I don't want—"

"Tough shit. Take it."

Shane hesitated, finally accepted the glass, cradled it between his hands and stared at it for a long minute before taking a deep swig. The liquid burned his mouth, his throat, hit his stomach with a fiery explosion.

"What the hell did you say to her to piss her off this time?"

Shane glanced over at Wyatt, opened his mouth to tell him, quickly shut it and shook his head. Did Wyatt know about the miscarriage? Had Chloe told him what had happened? Shane had no way of knowing but he sure as hell wasn't going to say anything, just in case. "Nothing. I just...I said something I shouldn't have."

"Yeah, I guess you did, the way she stormed out of here."

Shane slammed the glass on the table, jumped to his feet. "Thanks for the pep talk, Wyatt. You've really helped—"

"Sit your ass back down."

"I don't need—"

"I don't give a shit. Now sit down."

Shane blew him off with a dismissive wave, started heading for the stairs. He didn't need Wyatt's shit, not now. Not tonight.

"You broke her heart, you know. When you left."

The words froze him in place, paralyzed him with regret. Remorse. Shane closed his eyes, tilted his head back and swallowed against the knot of sorrow in his throat. "Yeah, I know."

"I don't think you do. Not really."

He spun around, anger pulsing through him when he saw the pity on Wyatt's face, the judgment in his eyes. "Don't tell me what I know and don't know—"

"You broke her heart but she never stopped loving you. The only time I ever saw Chloe cry—I mean really cry—was when you left. When you just picked up and left without saying a word."

"I don't want to hear this—"

"Maybe it's time you did."

Shane tried to block the image of Chloe crying, tried to block the pain the image brought. "Don't you think I already know that? Don't you think I'd go back and change things if I could?"

"Probably. But you're missing my point.
